European Team of the Season: Goalkeeper - Alessio Cragno (Cagliari)
Cagliari would have fared a lot worse had it not been for Alessio Cragno between the sticks. They eventually finished 15th with Cragno impressing. The 24-year-old goalkeeper made more saves (153) than any other shotstopper in Europe’s top five leagues this season to help return a WhoScored rating of 7.07, that enough to secure his spot in goal in this XI.
While it wasn’t the most impressive season for Cagliari, Cragno proved his credentials time and time again with a save success rate of 75.2%, that the 11th best of all goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues, which for a Rossoblu side that struggled on occasion, is a fine return for the Italian. To have kept seven clean sheets for a team that shipped 15.6 shots per game, one of the highest returns in Italy’s top tier, is commendable to say the least.
Cragno also won more WhoScored man of the match awards (8) than any other goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues to earn his place in the WhoScored team of the season across Europe’s top five leagues.
These numbers simply don't work as an effective ranking of keepers.
