Thomas Tuchel Stats: Why former Chelsea boss can be perfect appointment for England

On Tuesday morning it was reported that former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was in advanced negotiations with the FA over the vacant England job. By the evening, the deal was reportedly signed.

As of Wednesday morning, the 51-year-old has penned an 18-month deal to succeed Gareth Southgate as the Three Lions boss, starting in the role in January 2025.

Tuchel is a well-known face in England, given his short but successful spell in charge of Chelsea from January 2021 to September 2022. The German coach led the Blues to their second UEFA Champions League trophy just months after arriving at Stamford Bridge, following up that triumph with success in winning the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup later that year.

So it is fair to say that Tuchel arrives in the role of England manager with an impressive track record; he has won trophies just about everywhere he has been, and his record at Chelsea would suggest he has the know-how and tournament experience to navigate the challenges of international football.

Thomas Tuchel Stats: How has he fared throughout his career so far?

Tuchel started his managerial career in charge of FC Augsburg’s reserve side, impressing German clubs in just under a year at the helm, which saw him appointed by Bundesliga side Mainz 05 in 2009.

Tuchel spent five years with Mainz, overseeing 72 wins, 46 draws and 66 defeats, earning a 39.1% win rate. His work in the Rhineland saw his stock rise further for clubs in Germany, and in the summer of 2015 he was chosen as the most suitable candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund - given the similarities in their press-oriented footballing philosophies.

It was at Dortmund where Tuchel truly made his name as one of Europe’s top coaches. His first season at the club saw a club-record 82 league goals scored, while his side amassed the second highest points total in club history (78).

In his second, and final season, Tuchel led Dortmund to the DFB-Pokal title. He ended his tenure at BVB with a 62.6% win rate, overseeing 67 victories from 107 matches.

Next was French giants Paris Saint-Germain, whom Tuchel led to their first-ever UEFA Champions League final, in 2020, ultimately coming up short against Bayern Munich. In Paris, Tuchel added plenty of silverware to his cabinet, including two Ligue 1 titles, two Trophee des Champions, a Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue. His 74.8% win rate with PSG was the best he has recorded at any club in his career thus far.

Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea: His record in English football

Tuchel was dismissed by Paris Saint-Germain in December 2020, and waited just a month before taking his next role, at Chelsea. His first job in England started well, as his side went unbeaten in their first 14 matches in all competitions, setting a new record for the longest such run by a new head coach in club history.

In his early months at Chelsea, Tuchel also became the first head coach in Premier League history to keep a clean sheet in each of their opening five home matches. He would go on to guide the Blues to the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League finals that season, ultimately losing out to Leicester City in the former, but clinching an historic 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the latter.

Tuchel’s second season at Chelsea, his first full campaign at the club, was marred by ownership sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite off-pitch difficulties, Tuchel led Chelsea to the finals of the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, falling to defeat against Liverpool - on penalties - both times.

After a slow start to the 2022/23 campaign, under the watch of new owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, Tuchel was relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge. In just over 18 months in the role, he oversaw 60 victories, 24 draws and 16 defeats in 100 matches.

Following his time at Chelsea, Tuchel returned to Germany as the head coach at perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. He led Bayern to an 11th successive league title in 2022/23, only overseeing the final nine matches of the season, admittedly.

The following campaign, however, Tuchel's Bayern succumbed to their worst league finish since 2010 - third - with the unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen crowned champions. Like at Chelsea, Tuchel left Bayern having posted a 60% win rate, with 37 victories from 61 matches in charge.
