Viktor Gyokeres Next Club Odds: Hotshot Swede to follow Amorim to Man Utd?
If Tuesday’s Champions League game against Manchester City was a test, then Viktor Gyokeres passed with flying colours. He fluffed his lines early in the first half, blinking first when one-on-one with Ederson but made amends and then some with a hat-trick as Sporting CP gave Ruben Amorim a fitting send off with a resounding win over the Premier League champions.
Attention now turns to the January window, and rumours are rife that Gyokeres will follow Amorim out of the Sporting exit. While potential suitors may wait until next summer in order to pay a lowly £63m for the Swede’s services, a significant drop in the £83m release clause in the player’s contract, interested parties could move as early as January to lure the Sweden international away from the Portuguese capital to beat off rivals for his services.
Here, we run through the favourites on oddschecker to sign Gyokeres in the January window.
Manchester United – 5/2
Is a reunion with Ruben Amorim on the cards? Amorim takes over as Manchester United boss next week following Sporting’s meeting with Braga on Sunday in time for the November international break. While United have spent big recently to sign strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee to varying success, a world class frontman of Gyokeres calibre would go a long way to correcting their goal issues.
Amorim has transformed Gyokeres into one of the most lethal strikers in Europe, so it stands to reason that United have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old. Should Amorim use a three-man backline once he takes over at Old Trafford, then he’ll want a striker familiar with his demands to lead the charge, so a move to United at the turn of the year shouldn’t be ruled out. With that, United are the 5/2 favourites to land Gyokeres in January.
Arsenal – 10/1
Back-to-back 1-0 defeats saw Arsenal lose ground in the Premier League title race and the quest to finish in the top-eight of the 2024/25 Champions League league campaign. The managed just one shot on target against Newcastle at the weekend, and they didn’t really look like scoring in Wednesday’s loss to Inter in midweek either. As such, supporters are once again demanding a new striker at the Emirates to ease their goal concerns.
Arsenal were linked with a move for a new striker in the summer window, with Benjamin Sesko and Gyokeres both rumoured targets for the Gunners. The former penned a new deal with RB Leipzig earlier in the year to rule an exit, while they were priced out of a move for the latter in the off-season. Arsenal are now available at 10/1 to sign Gyokeres in January, though a chance to link up with Amorim in the New Year might see the Sweden international elect against a switch to north London.
Chelsea – 14/1
Another London side in the running for Gyokeres, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would firm up their interest in the Sweden international. Enzo Maresca is already well stocked on forwards with Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu all options for the Blues boss.
Chelsea were linked with a move for Gyokeres last January as they considered a new striker, yet a move for the 26-year-old makes little sense for the west London side, who not only have plenty of forward options but are unlikely to pursue a striker in his age bracket. At 14/1, he’s probably one to avoid.
