After voting to close the summer transfer window on the eve of the Premier League season, managers now have to make do with what they’ve got, at least until January. Deadline day was relatively disappointing but there were a flurry of late deals across the division and we have picked out five players from those transfers to consider for your Football INDEX portfolios.
1. ANDRE-FRANK ZAMBO ANGUISSA (FULHAM)
Having already signed seven players prior to deadline day, Fulham went out and bought five more on deadline day. It was an incredible day for the Cottagers, capped off with the club-record arrival of Marseille midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.
Fulham had already broken their transfer record to land Nice midfielder Jean Seri earlier in the window, but went one further and paid a reported £30m fee to prise the 22-year-old away from Marseille.
After two years on the fringes, the central midfielder emerged as a key player for Europa League finalists last season but his move to Craven Cottage still came as a huge shock. The Cameroon international is not expected to feature straight away for Fulham, but should soon form a solid partnership with Seri.
Fulham’s primary objective will be to avoid relegation but they should be looking much higher up the table after becoming the first newly promoted side to spend more than £100m in a summer transfer window.
If the likes of Seri and Anguissa perform to the standards expected, it won’t be long before their Premier League rivals show an interest in the former Ligue 1 duo. Anguissa’s Football INDEX share price is only £1.00 and he could prove a useful long-term acquisition for your portfolios.
2. ANDRE GOMES (EVERTON)
Everton ended up signing three players from Barcelona this summer, with two arriving on deadline day. Barcelona will be delighted to have shifted arguably their worst three players but that isn’t to suggest Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes and Lucas Digne are impressive pick ups for the Toffees.
The fact that Everton are able to convince players to choose Goodison Park as their next destination following life at Barcelona is impressive in itself, but in Mina and Gomes, in particular, they have players with high ceilings that failed to impress at Barcelona.
Gomes, especially, is a player of immense potential but just never got going at Camp Nou. Marco Silva has played a key part in attracting the likes of Mina and Gomes and both already seem to have a spring in their step following discussions with the Everton boss.
If Silva is capable of helping Gomes fulfil his potential then Everton will have a real player on their hands. The Portugal international is slightly injured and will take time getting up to speed after two fairly disastrous years, but he could also prove a useful acquisition for your Football INDEX portfolios with an eye on the future.
3. LEANDER DENDONCKER (WOLVES)
Fulham weren’t the only newly-promoted side to have a real go in the summer transfer window. Wolves cantered to the Championship title last season and enjoyed a successful summer of recruitment to bolster their options for the new season.
Wolves broke their transfer record to sign dribble king Adama Traore from Middlesbrough earlier in the week, but the arrival of Leander Dendoncker from Anderlecht is arguably their most eye-catching piece of business.
The Belgium international has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United and it will be fascinating to see how the 23-year-old gets on at Wolves. Capable of playing in defence and midfield, we should see Dendoncker’s versatility really utilised by Nuno this season.
Like the Gomes and Anguissa, Dendoncker could prove a long-term addition for your Football INDEX portfolios and his share price is only £1.04.
4. JORDAN AYEW (CRYSTAL PALACE)
At one stage it appeared Crystal Palace had missed out on the signing of Jordan Ayew, but the Eagles finally got their man late on deadline day. Signed on loan, Ayew should prove a really savvy investment from Roy Hodgson’s side.
Despite playing in a woeful Swansea side last term, Ayew still managed seven goals and two assists. Not only that, but only four Premier League players, all of whom play for last season’s top five, won the WhoScored Man of the Match award more times than Ayew (6).
The 26-year-old will have better surroundings at Palace, playing alongside better quality players, which should only translate into even more impressive performances. Ayew has already revealed Hodgson plans to use him up front, which could be alongside either Wilfried Zaha or Christian Benteke.
His Football INDEX share price is only £0.68 and he could prove a real bargain for your portfolios on the eve of the season.
5. LUCAS PEREZ (WEST HAM)
West Ham were one of the busiest sides during the summer, backing new manager Manuel Pellegrini with nine new signings. Two of those arrived on deadline day in the shape of Carlos Sanchez and Lucas Perez.
The Hammers relied too heavily on Marko Arnautovic last season but they have bolstered their offensive options this summer in order to ease the burden on the Austria international. At £4m, Perez could prove an absolute steal for Pellegrini’s side.
For whatever reason, Perez was not fancied at Arsenal. The Spaniard returned to Deportivo La Coruna on loan last term and finished the campaign strongly. He played a direct hand in 14 league goals (eight goals, six assists), while only Lionel Messi created more goalscoring opportunities than the 29-year-old in the division (79).
His Football INDEX share price is only £1.00 and that should increase steadily if he can reproduce his best form at the London Stadium.
