Where Sanchez, Mkhitaryan and Laporte rank among midweek Premier League debutants
We take a look at the best and worst debuts from the midweek matches as the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aymeric Laporte all made their Premier League bows for their new clubs.
1. Kenedy (NEWCASTLE 1-1 Burnley) - 7.72
Turning in a WhoScored.com man of the match display as Newcastle shared the spoils with Burnley, the Brazilian certainly showed the home fans what they can expect following a loan move from Chelsea. Kenedy had two attempts at goal, made two tackles and created more chances than any other player on the pitch (3), including the assist for Jamaal Lascelles’ opener.
2. Aymeric Laporte (MAN CITY 3-0 West Brom) - 7.14
While he’ll no doubt have far tougher tests in a City shirt in the coming weeks and months, Aymeric Laporte’s first outing for the club was an assured one. Billed as a Guardiola-style defender, comfortable at playing out from the back, the Frenchman proved as much with the best pass accuracy of any outfielder on the night (94.7%), completing eight long balls as well as a dribble.
3. Gerard Deulofeu (Stoke 0-0 WATFORD) - 7.03
Having seemed as though the window would end in disappointment for the Hornets, Deulofeu’s arrival on loan from Barcelona was a much needed lift to the fans and the winger was effective on debut at Stoke. The 23-year-old completed more dribbles and key passes (both three) than any teammate on Wednesday and put in a shift too, with one tackle and two interceptions.
4. Joao Mario (WEST HAM 1-1 Crystal Palace) - 6.88
While he didn’t set the world alight at the London Stadium on Tuesday, Mario did provide a glimpse into what the West Ham fans can expect from him this season. His solid all round performance in midfield included a shot, a key pass, a dribble, 3 tackles and 2 aerial duels won, so it was a decent start from the Portuguese.
5. Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea 0-3 BOURNEMOUTH) - 6.79
Replacing Davide Zappacosta on 65 minutes, 17-year-old Hudson-Odoi’s league debut and level of performance was the one positive to salvage from a dismal night for the Blues. Despite his cameo appearance he earned the fourth highest rating of any Chelsea player, completing five dribbles in just 25 minutes and attempting two shots.
6. Aaron Lennon (Newcastle 1-1 BURNLEY) - 6.63
He may have only had just over half an hour to make an impact at St. James’ Park but Lennon did just that, retaining possession better than any of his new teammates, firing off a shot on target, creating a chance, completing a dribble and completing two tackles. His was the best rating of any new signing to appear from the bench in midweek.
7. Guido Carrillo (SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 Brighton) - 6.39
While there was no dream debut for Carrillo in a Saints shirt the Argentine certainly offered more than Shane Long having replaced the Irishman at half-time on Wednesday. The 26-year-old mustered a shot at goal, completed two dribbles and held up play well in general offer the hosts a route back into a game that they trailed at the interval.
8. Leonardo Ulloa (Southampton 1-1 BRIGHTON) - 6.21
It was a second Brighton debut for Ulloa at St. Mary’s, but a first for the Seagulls in the Premier League for the 31-year-old, who couldn’t make an impact in the final knockings of the game as the home side pushed for a winner. He replaced Glenn Murray on 76 minutes, but neither of the two offer anything different from one another really.
9. Fousseni Diabate (Everton 2-1 LEICESTER) - 6.19
Believe it or not, and you wouldn’t have thought it at some stages this season, but Everton proved a tougher nut to crack for Fousseni Diabate than Peterborough. While the young forward had to make do with just 32 minutes of action this time out he didn’t see a great deal of action at Goodison, with no shots, key passes or dribbles to speak of.
10. Alexis Sanchez (Tottenham 2-0 MAN UTD) - 6.12
While not his first appearance in United red, Alexis’ league bow proved unsurprisingly more challenging than a trip to Yeovil in the FA Cup. Within 11 first half seconds the Chilean was in a familiar hands on hips pose after Christian Eriksen opened the scoring and while the entire away team were completely abject, Sanchez was among the main culprits, with zero shots, zero key passes and zero tackles despite playing the entire 90 minutes.
11. Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Swansea 3-1 ARSENAL) - 6.11
While he was a second half substitute at Swansea, Mkhitaryan did have half an hour to make an impression but it certainly wasn’t a positive one. With the scores level upon his introduction, while the goals that followed can’t be blamed on the Armenian he did very little to turn what was a dreadful Arsenal performance around, failing to create a single chance.
12. Ross Barkley (CHELSEA 0-3 Bournemouth) - 6.03
As far as league debuts are concerned, Ross Barkley’s in front of the home fans at the Bridge was one to forget. He understandably looked like a player that hadn’t featured for eight months and was completely ineffectual, wasting a number of passes and not even making up for a lack of attacking impact with defensive work rate. His withdrawal after 53 minutes came as no shock.
13. Daniel Sturridge (Man City 3-0 WEST BROM) - 5.99
The rustiness that most would have expected from Daniel Sturridge upon his return to first team action was apparent at his former stomping ground, having had a great chance to get off the mark for the Baggies late in the second half after coming off the bench. Instead he squandered the initial chance when through on goal to allow Kyle Walker to block before missing the target with the rebound. Sergio Aguero went up the other end a minute later and showed him how it was done.
Actually Mkhitaryan created two chances with key passes.
