Chelsea pair make European best XI after fine home showings

Chelsea boosted their top-four hopes with a comfortable 4-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to feature in the WhoScored.com European team of the week, while Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka also shone in his man of the match display against rivals Manchester City to make this XI. 

Goalkeeper: Alex McCarthy (Southampton) - 8.77 rating 

Southampton may have fallen to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Newcastle, which saw the Magpies leapfrog Saints in the table, but it could have been a whole lot worse for the south coast side on Saturday. Alex McCarthy put in a solid shift between the sticks as he made a total of six saves at St. Mary's, including a first half penalty stop to deny Matt Ritchie on the stroke of half time, to yield a WhoScored rating of 8.77. 

Right-back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United) - 8.53 rating 

Manchester United's 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City on Sunday will be best remembered for Ederson's pair of gaffes that saw Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay hit the back of the net, however the derby win capped another exceptional performance from right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The England hopeful landed the WhoScored man of the match award with a rating of 8.53 as he made eight tackles, three interceptions and two clearances in a standout display at Old Trafford. 

Centre-back: David Garcia (Osasuna) - 8.29 rating 

Osasuna edged out a narrow 1-0 win over relegation threatened Espanyol with David Garcia imperious at the heart of the home side's defence. Indeed, the 26-year-old won an impressive 12 aerial duels, made five clearances, two tackles and two interceptions in a fine rearguard showing from the Spaniard, whose excellent defensive showing contributed towards a WhoScored rating of 8.29. 

Centre-back: Nayef Aguerd (Dijon) - 8.20 rating 

Dijon gave their survival hopes a shot in the arm with a hard fought 2-1 win over Ligue 1 basement boys Toulouse. The hosts piled further misery upon Les Violets and ended a five-match winless run in the process as Nayef Aguerd picked the opportune time to bag his first league goal of the season. The Moroccan's strike came from one of two shots, while the 23-year-old was proactive off the ball as he made six clearances, two tackles and two interceptions to partner Garcia in defence with a WhoScored rating of 8.20. 

Left-back: Faitout Maouassa (Rennes) - 8.50 rating 

The first of two Rennes players following their resounding 5-0 home win over Montpellier, Faitout Maouassa continues to impress from left-back for the French side as he bagged his second goal in as many league appearances in the comfortable victory. His third league goal of the season came from one of two shots and he pressed forward well, completing two dribbles, to garner a WhoScored rating of 8.50. 

Right midfield: Willian (Chelsea) - 9.29 rating 

The first of two Chelsea representatives on the back of the Blues' 4-0 win over Everton, Willian scored and assisted in a Premier League match for just the second time this season as the west London side made it back-to-back home league wins for the first time since a three-match winning run from September to November. The Brazilian's goal came from one of two shots and assist from one of three key passes with Willian good value for his WhoScored rating of 9.29. 

Central midfield: Ross Barkley (Chelsea) - 9.78 rating 

The second Chelsea player in this XI, Ross Barkley marked his best-rated Premier League performance in a Chelsea shirt against former employers Everton as two of his six key passes resulted in an assist. Meanwhile, the England international drove forward with purpose as he completed seven dribbles to feature in the European team of the week with a WhoScored rating of 9.78, that the best in the Premier League this week. 

Central midfield: Paulinho (Bayer Leverkusen) - 9.24 rating 

Paulinho marked his first ever Bundesliga start in style as the Brazilian teenager churned out a man of the match display as Bayer Leverkusen tore Eintracht Frankfurt to shreds. The midfielder had a direct hand in three of their four goals on home turf, with two of his five shots hitting the back of the net and one of his two key passes resulting in an assist. An additional three successful dribbles helped Paulinho make this XI with a WhoScored rating of 9.24. 

Left midfield: Flavien Tait (Rennes) - 9.83 rating 

Rounding off the midfield and the Rennes contingent, Flavien Tait has had a direct hand in four league goals this season, two of which came in the 5-0 win over Montpellier. One of his two shots resulted in his second league goal of the campaign, while Tait could have easily had more than one assist having created five goalscoring chances. The 27-year-old also made two tackles as he garnered a better WhoScored rating (9.83) than any other player in Europe's top five leagues this week. 

Striker: Matheus Cunha (Hertha Berlin) - 8.77 rating 

Matheus Cunha has made quite the impact following his January arrival from RB Leipzig as he netted his second league goal on his fourth Hertha Berlin outing in their 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen. The 20-year-old earned his second WhoScored man of the match award with the German capital side in the stalemate as he routinely chanced his luck in front of goal, mustering nine shots in all. Seven successful dribbles and one key pass sees the Brazilian youngster feature in this XI with a WhoScored rating of 8.77.  

Striker: Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen) - 8.97 rating 

Paulinho may have earned the plaudits from Bayer Leverkusen's 4-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, but the home victory saw Kai Havertz maintain his stunning start to 2020 as he had a direct hand in his 11th and 12th league goals this calendar year on his 12th Bundesliga appearance. The 20-year-old's goal came from his only shot and his assist from his only key pass. Havertz was tidy in possession, with 94.3% of his 35 passes finding a teammate, while two successful dribbles was enough to secure a WhoScored rating of 8.97 to round off this XI.
