Kane finds shooting boots as England dominate Euro 2020 quarter-final best XI
After mauling Ukraine 4-0, England are the dominant side in the Euro 2020 quarter-final best XI, with representatives from fellow semi-finalists' Denmark and Italy also making the cut.
Yann Sommer (Switzerland) - 8.45
Switzerland put in a spirited display against Spain and came close to claiming another European heavyweight scalp on Friday evening as they bowed out of Euro 2020 on penalties. Yann Sommer was the star performer in the game as he made 10 saves, a record in a match at Euro 2020, and saved one penalty to kick off the quarter-final best XI with a WhoScored rating of 8.45.
Vladimir Coufal (Czech Republic) - 8.11
Czech Republic crashed out of Euro 2020 in their 2-1 loss to Denmark on Saturday evening, but they had the Danish Dynamite on the backfoot for much of the second half. Vladimir Coufal provided the assist for Patrik Schick to give the Czech's a chance of a comeback, that coming from one of three key passes, while returns of three interceptions and two tackles helped the right-back to a WhoScored rating of 8.11.
Harry Maguire (England) - 7.89
Harry Maguire is the first of four England players to feature in the quarter-finals best XI having landed a WhoScored rating of 7.89 in their 4-0 win over Ukraine. Maguire headed in England's second in Rome, while three clearances ensured Jordan Pickford was rarely tested at the Olimpico. In addition, Maguire found a teammate with 96.8% of his 93 attempted passes to secure a spot in this side.
Thomas Vermaelen (Belgium) - 7.90
Belgium fell to this seemingly unstoppable Italy machine in Munich on Friday night, succumbing to a 2-1 loss to the Azzurri. Thomas Vermaelen, though, was solid at the heart of the Red Devils' three-man defence. The 35-year-old maximised his impressive reading of the game to make five interceptions, more than any other player in the quarter-finals, along with four clearances and four tackles to yield a WhoScored rating of 7.90.
Rounding off the defence is England left-back Luke Shaw. Few expected Shaw to be first choice in his position this summer, but the Manchester United star has made the most of his chance to consolidate a starting spot. Indeed, the 25-year-old got forward well, registering two assists from his three key passes to secure his place in this XI with a WhoScored rating of 8.17.
The third England player to feature, and third Manchester United player in the side, Jadon Sancho made his first Euro 2020 start against Ukraine and didn't disappoint as he landed a WhoScored rating of 7.52. Only Belgium's Jeremy Doku (8) completed more dribbles than Sancho (4) in the quarter-finals, while the latter worked hard off the ball, too, making one tackle and one interception to feature.
Thomas Delaney (Denmark) - 8.60
Thomas Delaney headed Denmark in front in their 2-1 win over Czech Republic in a fine display from the experienced midfielder. The Borussia Dortmund man won more aerial duels (7) than any other player in the quarter-finals, and was superb off the ball as he made three interceptions and two tackles to nail down a spot in midfield with a WhoScored rating of 8.60.
Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland) - 8.19
Joining Delaney in the middle of the park, Xherdan Shaqiri was unfortunate to be on the losing side against Spain. The Liverpool man scored Switzerland's equaliser with 20 minutes to play in Saint Petersburg, hitting the back of the net with one of two shots, and he was unlucky not to register an assist as he made three key passes. Three successful dribbles meant Shaqiri was good value for his WhoScored rating of 8.19.
Lorenzo Insigne (Italy) - 8.44
Italy's sole representative is their match winner Lorenzo Insigne. The Napoli man struck just before the break in Munich to ensure a 2-1 win over Belgium, beating Thibaut Courtois with one of three shots. The 30-year-old was unlucky not to add an assist to his goal as he made three key passes to help land a WhoScored rating of 8.44.
Rounding off the England contingent is captain Harry Kane, whose brace against Ukraine contributed towards his player of the round award with a WhoScored rating of 9.30. Kane struggled in the group stages, but has come alive in the knockouts as he scored twice in Rome from four shots to take his total to three goals at Euro 2020. The Tottenham man also won three aerial duels to cap a fine performance.
Kasper Dolberg (Denmark) - 7.55
Joining Kane on the frontline is Denmark sensation Kasper Dolberg. The Nice forward scored his third goal of Euro 2020 at the end of the first half in their 2-1 win over Czech Republic, getting on the end of a fine Joakim Maehle cross to tuck past Tomas Vaclik. The 23-year-old defended the Denmark goal well during his 59 minutes on the pitch as he made two clearances to complete the quarter-final best XI.
