Bundesliga round-up: Bayern Munich joined at the top by surprise duo

Bayern Munich have started the new season with two wins and are joined at the top of the Bundesliga by Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin. Neither were expected to get off to impressive starts, while RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke only have one point between them.

Schalke have lost successive matches, losing 2-0 at home to Hertha on Sunday. Hertha had only scored one goal in their last 11 matches away to Schalke prior to this weekend, making the result even more surprising. Ondrej Duda scored both goals for Pal Dardai’s side to finish the weekend’s Bundesliga action as the highest WhoScored rated player (9.40).

Duda only scored one league goal in 17 Bundesliga appearances last season and has now surpassed that in 90 minutes against Schalke. Not only was Duda a threat in attack, scoring his goals from three shots, creating one goalscoring opportunity for a teammate and completing one dribble, but the 23-year-old worked hard defensively, too. He won four tackles and made one interception, while also winning three fouls to alleviate pressure on his team.

The second highest WhoScored rated player from gameweek two in the Bundesliga was another two-goal hero. Hoffenheim lost their opener to Bayern Munich but bounced back with a 3-1 win over Freiburg on Saturday. Adam Szalai scored twice (8.67 rating), adding to his goal against Bayern last weekend. The 30-year-old had eight shots against Freiburg, more than any other player in a Bundesliga match this season. The Hungary international also won four aerial duels, created one goalscoring opportunity, completed one dribble and was fouled once.

Rounding off the three highest WhoScored rated players from the weekend’s Bundesliga action is Fortuna Duesseldorf goalkeeper Michael Rensing (8.61 rating), who helped the newly-promoted side take a shock point away to RB Leipzig on Sunday. The 34-year-old made seven saves, won two aerial duels and successfully claimed two crosses, while only two teammates touched the ball more times.

While the aforementioned trio caught the eye with their impressive displays, the same cannot be said about Schalke’s Yevhen Konoplyanka, who finished the weekend as the lowest WhoScored rated player. Making his first appearance of the season, the 28-year-old was sent off in added time against Hertha Berlin to garner a WhoScored rating of 5.10. The Ukraine international only completed 66.7% of his passes and committed two fouls prior to his dismissal.
