European Team of the Season: LB – Aleksandar Kolarov (Roma)
The second Roma representative in our European Team of the season is left-back Aleksandar Kolarov.
The 32-year-old only joined Roma last summer but has been a roaring success for the Serie A giants this season.
Kolarov was signed from Manchester City on a free transfer to cover for the injured Emerson and has performed beyond expectations.
In fact, the Serbia international’s form forced Emerson to leave the club, joining Chelsea in January after recovering from a serious knee injury.
Best known for his attacking qualities as a defender, Kolarov did not disappoint Roma supporters this season.
In fact, Kolarov played a direct hand in more league goals than any other Serie A defender this season (10 – two goals, eight assists).
Not only that, but only three Serie A players garnered a higher WhoScored rating than the Serb (7.52).
Edin Dzeko benefitted from Kolarov’s deadly left foot more so than most, converting four of the eight assists he registered in the league.
In fact, only Ivan Perisic to Mauro Icardi (7) and Gaston Ramirez to Fabio Quagliarella (6) were more prolific assist-to-goalscorer combinations in Italy’s top-flight.
