No Ronaldo or De Bruyne among top remaining Champions League performers

After a lengthy wait, the Champions League returns tonght as Manchester City take on Real Madrid and Juventus host Lyon. Bayern Munich welcome Chelsea to Bavaria and Napoli make the trip to Barcelona on Saturday night as the eight teams seek to join RB Leipzig, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta and PSG in the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition. 

Manchester City hold a first leg advantage ahead of their clash with Real Madrid having secured a 2-1 win in Spain courtesy of goals from Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne. Los Blancos enter the tie without the suspended Sergio Ramos, which is a huge blow. For Juventus, they need to overcome a first leg 1-0 loss in France, by Lyon's match winner that evening, Lucas Tousart, has left to join Hertha Berlin. 

In the other two second leg clashes, Bayern Munich secured a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge to effectively seal their quarter-final spot at Chelsea's expense. The Blues have a raft of absentees ahead of their meeting with the Bavarian powerhouse at the Allianz Arena, but in turn; Bayern haven't played a competitive game in over a month. In the final last-16 second leg game, Barcelona have an away goal advantage after playing out a 1-1 draw with Napoli at the end of February. 

With plenty at stake, we take a look at the top 10 best rated players of those still remaining in the competition and to make more than three starts in the competition, with joint-tournament favourites Bayern Munich dominating this countdown... 

10. Houssem Aouar (Lyon) - 7.73 rating 

Kicking off the countdown is Lyon youngster Houssem Aouar. The French midfielder has recently been linked with a Premier League switch and for good reason. Aouar has scored one and provided three assists for the Ligue 1 side and will aim to help Lyon to the quarter-finals of the Champions League at Juventus' expense tonight. 

9. Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City) - 7.77 rating 

The first of two Manchester City representatives on this list, Gabriel Jesus has been City's starting striker in the competition, even before Sergio Aguero's absence. Evidently it's been a sound move by Pep Guardiola, with Jesus having a direct hand in seven goals, scoring five, so far in the competition, that one of the better returns in the Champions League. 

8. Memphis Depay (Lyon) - 7.84 rating 

The second Lyon player on this list, Memphis Depay was intially set to miss the Champions League meetings with Juventus due to injury, but the Coronavirus pandemic and delay to action means the Dutchman is fit to feature for the French side. The 26-year-old has scored five times from his five starts to help feature on this leaderboard. 

7. Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) - 7.85 rating 

Serge Gnabry has scored more Champions League goals in London this season (6) than any other Tottenham or Chelsea player having bagged four times at Spurs and twice in Bayern Munich's 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge. With one additional assist, that coming in the 7-2 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Gnabry is the first of four Bayern players on this list. 

6. Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) - 7.87 rating 

No player has provided more assists than Riyad Mahrez (4) in the Champions League this season and the Algerian will look to add to that record when Manchester City take on Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium tonight. Those four assists have come from 13 key passes, while an additional goal has seen Mahrez garner a WhoScored rating of 7.87. 

5. Thiago (Bayern Munich) - 8.00 rating 

Bayern's second player in this ranking is midfielder Thiago. The Spaniard has been linked with a summer exit from Bavaria, and he has ample suitors, which shouldn't come as too much of a shock. Thiago has two assists in the Champions League this season and a dribble success rate of 72.7% has helped the 29-year-old come in at fifth in this standings. 

4. Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) - 8.09 rating 

A key player at the Eithad Stadium for Real Madrid tonight will be creative star Toni Kroos. The German has made more key passes (22) than any other player in the Champions League this season and has one goal and one assist to his name to show for his efforts. A pass-master in possession, Kroos has yielded a pass success rate of 93.3% this season. 

3. Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) - 8.32 rating 

Securing the first podium spot, Alphonso Davies has been a revelation for Bayern Munich in his breakthrough campaign. Excellent in the Bundesliga, the speedster has been sensational in the Champions League, too, as his WhoScored rating (8.32) suggests. Davies has two assists to his name, those coming in wins over Tottenham and Chelsea, while the 19-year-old's 4.8 dribbles per game is the third best in the competition. 

2. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - 8.49 rating 

Second in these standings is Barcelona star Lionel Messi. The Argentine may have been unable to help the Blaugrana to the LaLiga title, but will do all he can to ensure the Champions League returns to Camp Nou later this month. The 33-year-old has completed more dribbles (47) than any other player and has two goals and three assists to his name as Barcelona gear up for their welcome Napoli. 

1. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 9.20 rating 

Topping the Champions League player rating standings, Robert Lewandowski has been unstoppable in the competition. The Bayern Munich star has scored more goals (11) than any other player, and the same as Saturday's opponents Chelsea as a whole. The 31-year-old has scored in every Champions League appearance this season and his fine showings on the Bayern frontline has contributed towards his stunning WhoScored rating of 9.20.
