Chelsea and Tottenham pairings make latest Premier League Team of the Week
West Brom are the dominant side in the Premier League team of the week after their 0-0 draw with Newcastle, while Chelsea and Manchester United representatives also make the cut following respective wins over Everton and Manchester City. It's a Tottenham attacking duo who steal the plaudits this week, however, as we run through the best XI.
Sam Johnstone (West Brom) - 7.90
West Brom dominate the Premier League best XI after a 0-0 draw with Newcastle. The stalemate means the Baggies have lost just one of their last six with Sam Johnstone solid between the sticks in the relegation six-pointer. Johnstone made five saves at the Hawthorns in Sunday's early kick off to contribute towards his inclusion in this XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.90.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United) - 7.63
Manchester United secured an impressive 2-0 Manchester Derby win on Sunday to keep their slim title chances alive. Aaron Wan-Bissaka put in a solid rearguard showing at Manchester City to make the team of the week with a WhoScored rating of 7.63. Five interceptions, three clearances and three tackles ensured a clean sheet at the Etihad Stadium and a spot in the XI.
Kyle Bartley (West Brom) - 7.95
For the second time in the space of three gameweeks, Kyle Bartley features at the heart of the defence in the Premier League team of the week. The West Brom defender was at his proactive best to keep the Newcastle attack at bay on Sunday as he won 10 aerial duels and made eight clearances to return a WhoScored rating of 7.95.
Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham) - 7.90
The first of two Fulham players in the team partners Bartley at the heart of the defence. Tosin Adarabioyo put in a fine defensive showing as the Cottagers secured a 1-0 win at defending champions Liverpool on Sunday to really boost their survival hopes. 18 clearances in the victory is a Premier League record in a game this season and helped Adarabioyo to a spot in the side with a WhoScored rating of 7.90.
Conor Townsend (West Brom) - 8.29
Rounding off the defence is the third West Brom player to make the best XI. Conor Townsend put in a man of the match display from left-back against Newcastle, with a WhoScored rating of 8.29 enough to land the star man award. Townsend was unlucky not to register an assist in the 0-0 draw having made five key passes, a personal record this season, while four interceptions, three clearances and two tackles saw him nail down the left-back berth in the team.
Gareth Bale (Tottenham) - 9.64
Gareth Bale looks to be getting back to his best following his Tottenham return over the summer as he landed a WhoScored rating of 9.64 in Spurs' 4-1 win over Crystal Palace. Bale netted twice in the victory, his fourth and fifth league goals of the season, as he found the back of the net with his two efforts on goal. Additional returns of four key passes and two successful dribbles capped a fine performance from the Welshman.
Fulham's match winner on Sunday features in the middle of the park and is the second of two Cottagers representatives in the XI. Mario Lemina picked the opportune time to bag his first league goal of the season with his strike on the stroke of half time enough to secure the man of the match award at Anfield. The Gabon star worked hard off the ball to help defend the Fulham goal as he made three interceptions, two tackles and one clearance to yield a WhoScored rating of 8.37.
Jorginho earned a second WhoScored man of the match award in a row as he put in a fine shift in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Everton on Monday evening. The Italian notched his sixth league goal of the campaign against the Toffees, finding a way past Jordan Pickford with one of three shots in the victory, and retained possession well as he found a teammate with 84.9% of his 86 passes to partner Lemina in the middle of the park with a WhoScored rating of 7.89.
Marcos Alonso (Chelsea) - 7.76
The second Chelsea player to make the cut this week, Marcos Alonso, like Jorginho, is one who has benefitted from Thomas Tuchel's appointment at Stamford Bridge. Alonso earned a WhoScored rating of 7.76 against Everton, that his second best rated performances in a Premier League game in 2020/21, as he got forward well, making four key passes and completing one dribble to round off the midfield.
Harry Kane is our Premier League player of the week having had a direct hand in all four goals in Tottenham's 4-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday night. Kane provided two assists in the victory, both for Gareth Bale, and netted twice in the comfortable victory to land his 10th WhoScored man of the match award in the London Derby as he garnered a perfect 10 rating.
Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace) - 8.32
Joining Kane on the frontline is Crystal Palace frontman Christian Benteke. The Belgian powered a header past Hugo Lloris on the stroke of half time to give the Eagles a fighting chance of securing a result at Tottenham and while it wasn't to come to pass, Benteke still impressed. Indeed, 15 aerial duels won was the most in a Premier League match this season as the towering frontman landed a WhoScored rating of 8.32 to feature.
