In-form Schick partners prolific Lewandowski in Bundesliga December best XI
Bayern Munich were the only Bundesliga side to win every game in December and are the dominant side in the team of the month, with four players from the league leaders making the cut. Elsewhere, the likes of Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt are also represented in the best XI.
Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim) - 7.22
Hoffenheim were one of two Bundesliga teams to go through December unbeaten, collecting eight points from 12 available in the process. Oliver Baumann was unable to keep a clean sheet, but was crucial for the German side as no goalkeeper made more saves (17) than the 31-year-old to kick off the team of the month with a WhoScored rating of 7.22.
Benjamin Pavard (Bayern Munich) - 7.07
The first of four Bayern Munich players to feature, Benjamin Pavard returned a modest WhoScored rating of 7.07 in December. The Frenchman provided his first assist of the season, teeing up Jamal Musiala in Bayern's narrow 2-1 win over Mainz 05, to contribute towards his inclusion.
Nico Schlotterbeck (Freiburg) - 7.99
Only Union Berlin (2) conceded fewer goals than Freiburg (3) in December as Nico Schlotterbeck once again shone for the Bundesliga outfit, yielding a WhoScored rating of 7.99. The young centre-back scored his first and second goals of the season in December, while additional returns of 16 clearances, nine tackles and nine interceptions saw the German secure his place in the team.
Obite Evan Ndicka (Eintracht Frankfurt) - 7.71
Joining Schlotterbeck at the back is another promising young defender in Germany. Obite Evan Ndicka doubled his goal and assist return in December, with the former coming in a man of the match display against Bayer Leverkusen. 16 clearances ranked among the top 15 players and helped to land a WhoScored rating of 7.71.
David Raum (Hoffenheim) - 7.67
David Raum's best rated performance of the season came in December as the left-back shone in Hoffenheim's 2-1 win at Freiburg. Raum had a direct hand in two goals, providing one assist, that coming from 12 key passes, the third best return in Germany's top tier. The 23-year-old earned an average WhoScored rating of 7.67 to round off the defence.
Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) - 7.72
Serge Gnabry turned out arguably the best performance of the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign in December as he tore VfB Stuttgart to shreds in the penultimate gameweek of the Hinrunde. Gnabry had a direct hand in all five goals in Bayern's 5-0 victory over Die Roten, scoring three times, and a perfect 10 display helped him to an average of 7.72 in December.
Anton Stach was one of only three players to win multiple WhoScored man of the match awards in December, earning the accolade in wins over Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin. The 23-year-old certainly maximised a statistically calculated strength of 'ball interception' as only Maxence Lacroix (17) made more interceptions than Stach (15) to feature in the middle of the park with a WhoScored rating of 7.80.
Niklas Dorsch (Augsburg) - 7.63
Partnering Stach in the middle of the park is Augsburg ball winner Niklas Dorsch. No player made more tackles than Dorsch (13) in December, all the while scoring his first goal of the season, that coming in a 2-0 win at FC Koln. An additional seven interceptions saw the German secure a spot in the XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.63.
Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich) - 7.57
The penultimate Bayern player in the Bundesliga team of the month is wing-wizard Leroy Sane. He had a direct hand in two goals in December, scoring one and assisting another, those coming from respective returns of 15 shots and seven key passes. Sane also excelled off the ball, making nine tackles to return a WhoScored rating of 7.57.
Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 8.49
The Bundesliga player of the month is Bayern star Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker scored five goals in his four league outings, with his best rated performance, like Gnabry, coming in a 5-0 win over VfB Stuttgart, where he earned a perfect WhoScored 10 rating to end December with an average of 8.49.
Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen) - 8.20
Of the 12 goals Bayer Leverkusen scored in December, Patrik Schick had a direct hand in nine, scoring eight times. A four-goal haul in their 7-1 win over Bundesliga whipping boys Greuther Fuerth was the stand out display for the month as Schick returned a WhoScored rating of 8.20 to partner Lewandowski on the frontline.
