Team News

St. Johnstone
Motherwell
  • St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari named five changes to the Saints side that fell to a 3-1 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox, before they knocked their weekend opponents Motherwell out of the Scottish Cup with a sole goal victory in Perth last Saturday.
  • Andy Fisher made his Saints debut at Ibrox, continuing in goal for the weekend win. Barry Douglas replaced Aaron Essel at left-back joining Bozo Mikulic, Jack Sanders and Drey Wright in the Saints back four.
  • New signings Victor Griffith and Sam Curtis came into the five-man midfield, as did Jason Holt and Graham Carey to support matchwinner Makenzie Kirk. Fran Franczak, Max Kucheriavyi, Nicky Clark and Benji Kimpioka all dropped onto the bench.
  • Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell named four changes to the Steelmen side that fell to a 3-1 defeat to Hibernian at Easter Road in their last Scottish Premiership match, before losing to Saints in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.
  • Archie Mair made his Well debut at Easter Road, continuing behind Kofi Balmer, Shane Blaney and Dan Casey - as opposed to Paul McGinn - in the back three. Andy Halliday took the armband, as he and Kai Andrews continued in midfield.
  • Marvin Kaleta replaced Stephen O'Donnell at right wing-back, as Ewan Wilson continued on the left-hand side. Tawanda Maswanhise and Sam Nicholson, who replaced Tom Sparrow and Tony Watt, supported Jack Vale who is suspended for this weekend's game.

Prediction

  • St Johnstone host Motherwell in Perth for the second Saturday in succession after the two teams met at McDiarmid Park in the Scottish Cup last weekend.
  • Saints set up a round of 16 tie with Hamilton Academical, of the Scottish Championship, in the Scottish Cup after their sole goal success over this weekend's opponents last weekend. The win against the Well was St Johnstone's first since beating Kilmarnock in November by the same scoreline at McDiarmid Park. At risk of being left behind in the league, another win in Perth would be pivotal.
  • Motherwell have won both league meetings against St Johnstone so far this season, home and away by a 2-1 scoreline, so will be disappointed at crashing out of the Scottish Cup to the side that's bottom of the Scottish Premiership table. The Well have won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions, and will want to recover from this wobble soon if they're to remain in fifth or higher.
  • Despite neither team being in the best of fettle, Saints will have gained huge morale against Motherwell last weekend so will aim for a quickfire double over the Steelmen in Perth.
